What you will need:

  • 2 x 14” x 25” Fabric, one for the front and one for the back of the stocking.

  • 25” x 25” Fabric for the lining (this does not need to be expensive as it will be inside the stocking and not on show!).

  • 1.5” X 8.5” Fabric (of your choice) for the loop!

  • 14” x 25” wadding.

  • 14” x 25” fabric for the back of the wadding for quilting - (you can quilt without this fabric but I prefer to use a cheap piece of fabric to help this process and reduce flint build up in my machine)

  • Basting Spray.

  • Matching thread for the quilting.

  • Pom Pom Maker (optional).

  • Wool for the Pom Poms! (optional).

Step One

  • Print out the stocking template.

  • Align the pieces of the stocking template together so the dotted lines line up on top of each other and secure with tape.

  • Cut out the stocking template.

Step Two

  • Take your lining fabric, draw around the stocking template one way, then flip the template so it is the other way up and draw around the template again.

  • Cut out the 2 lining pieces and put to one side.

  • Draw around the Template on the backing fabric as shown below, with the right side of the fabric face down and put to one side.

Step Three

making the loop!

  • Fold the loop fabric in half along the long edge, press and open out.

  • Fold the long edges into the centre fold and press again.

  • Fold along the original fold line and press again.

  • Sew a straight line, 1/4” allowance along the open folded edge.

Step Four

prepping the front of the stocking!

  • Take a your fabric for the back of the wadding, spray the wrong side with basting spray

  • Lay your wadding on top, laying it as flat as possible with no lumps

  • Spray the top of the wadding

  • Lay the front fabric onto of the wadding as carefully as possible making sure there are no lumps or creases.

Step Five

Quilting the front of the stocking

You can quilt any pattern you like, there are no rules here!

  • For this stocking pictured I quilted parallel lines which I marked on the front of the fabric with a friction pen before quilting which I found easier to see on the dark red fabric.

  • Take this to your sewing machine and sew/quilt the lines, make sure to go over the outline of the stocking template.

  • If you have used a friction pen, use an iron on low heat to remove the marks after sewing.

  • Cut out your stocking, your quilted front is made!

Step six

Constructing your Christmas Stocking

  • Sew the top of the front and lining B and the top of lining A and the back as shown below with a 1/4” seam allowance and pressing open the seams

  • Fold the loop in half and lay the raw edges on the edge of the stocking, approximately 1/2” from the middle joining line of the front stocking, as shown in diagram 1 below.

  • Place the 2 joined stockings parts on top of each other, RST.

  • Align the middle joining seam.

  • Sew a 1/4” seam allowance all the way around leaving a 3” gap in the lining as shown in diagram 3 below.

  • Clip all the curves on both the outer and lining fabrics to reduce bulk once turned.

  • Turn the stocking the right way, pulling it through the gap.

  • Sew up the gap.

  • Push the lining inside the stocking, matching up the seams.

  • Give it one final press and then it is ready to hang and fill with goodies for Xmas!
